The Gallery

Some different views of the Galerie Zygos space at 256 Leoforos Kifissias, Halandri, Athens.

Galerie Zygos was founded in 1956 by Frantzis and Catherine Frantzeskakis as the first professionally organized fine arts gallery of Greece.

Galerie Zygos has been an authority on contemporary Greek art, and was instrumental in the establishment of important Greek artists such as Yannis Gaitis, Alekos Fassianos, Dimitris Mytaras, Christos Caras, Manolis Polymeris, and many many others.

We will also mention the first exhibition in Greece of works by Picasso, the International Poster Exhibition, the first show of Yannis Tsarouhis upon his return from Paris, the Bouzianis exhibition 20 years after his death, two post-mortem shows of works by Agenor Asteriades, the great exhibition of engraver Nikolaos Ventouras, etc., etc.

From 1963 to 1965 Zygos operated Roloi, the first center of applied arts in Greece, introducing over 400 innovative and creative applications of young but also established artists.

Since 2002 the gallery is under the direction of Ion Frantzeskakis.

True to its history Galerie Zygos selects and exhibits the work of established but also of younger talented artists.

The gallery searches for and promotes the work of artists whose work is identified by its quality and aesthetics and not ephemeral trends and styles where only criterion is the context itself.

The inaugural group show with which Galerie Zygos launched its new period of operation in 2002 included artists from the very first period of Zygos’ life, such as painters Christos Caras and Panayotis Tetsis, artists from the long period of Iofontos St., such as mosaicist Pelagia Angelopoulou, sculptors Amalia Vamvakou, Kostas Dikefalos, Roza Eliou and Thodoros Papayannis, engravers Panayotis Gravalos and Eleni Economidou, and painters Gerasimos Dionatos, Sarandis Karavousis, Kostas Karnavas, Nikos Kourouniotis, Yulika Lakeridou, Katie Mavrommati,  Manolis Polymeris, Aristotelis Solounias and Anna Christeli. Also participating were American artists Leslie Abrahams and Laurence Bach, as well as first-time participants Eufrosyni Doxiades, George Koumouros, Alekos Levidis and Syni Papayanni.

Since 2002, Galerie Zygos has presented solo shows with the work of artists: Pyrros Alexopoulos, Alexandros Alieas, Syni Anastasiades, Kostas Anastasopoulos, Bedros Aslanian, Gerasimos Dionatos, Haido, Eugenia Georganda, Nikos Giannetos, Helene Godard, Errica Gutenswager, Kleanthis Hatzinikos, Yannis Kadras, Kostas Karnavas, Apostolos Kyritsis, George Koumouros,  Karolos Kambelopoulos, Katerina Karagianni-Iatropoulou, Vangelis Karanassios, Kostas Lahas, Alexandros Loukissas, Vassilis Mavros, Artemis Melissaratou, Ioakeim Minaretzopoulos, Alexandros Papaconstantinou, Dimitris Papagrigorakis, Anna Papazoglou, Manolis Polymeris, Maro Rizikianou-Passisi, Tassos Shizas, Kostas Spyropoulos, Tita Stavrou, Alice Tournikiotis, Dimitris Tzinis, Lela Tsopanaki, Alexandros Vakirtzis, Katerina Yazitzoglou.
