In 1994 Ion Frantzeskakis opened Stoa Gallery, at 11 Petaluma Blvd. N., at the picturesque town of Petaluma, a few miles North of San Francisco, in Northern California.
Housed in the old ballroom of a Victorian building which escaped the earthquake of 1906, and following the invitation of dear friend and oustanding photographer Morrie Camhi who owned the building, the gallery soon became a friendly meeting place for artlovers of the area.
Stoa exhibited, among others, the work of sculptors Peter Forakis and Richard Chavez, photographers Morrie Camhi and Scott Hess, painters Leslie Abrahams, Manolis Polymeris, Angelos Sakkis, Carolyn Myers, Alexandros Vakirtzis, Robert McChesney, Toby Lurie, and others.
Stoa Gallery also became a venue for Petaluma Poetry Walk poetry readings, music performances from cello to didjeridoo, fundraising host for environmental causes, practice shelter for the local Women's Choir...
Joe Catalano (1952-1998) performed with his wife, poet and musician Wendy Jeanne Burch in their collaborative piece Traffic Prayers, a meditation upon the bardos, written about in the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Joe used keyboards, didjeridoo and a wind instrument of his invention...
We miss Petaluma, our good friends there, and mostly Morrie...
